6 Days - Birding Tour
Ecuadorian Amazon
Birding Tour 6 Days / 5 Nights
The most complete birdwatching experience in Yasuní
Dive deeper into birdwatching in Yasuní National Park with the 6-day / 5-night Birding Tour at Napo Wildlife Center. With more time at the lodge, you’ll observe iconic species, explore diverse ecosystems, and maximize your wildlife photography opportunities in the Amazon rainforest.
Day 1 – Arrival at the lodge
After a rewarding 30-minute flight over the eastern Andean mountain range, you will arrive in the city of Puerto Francisco de Orellana, also known as “El Coca.” From there, a 10-minute transfer in private transportation will bring you to our exclusive dock, where we will welcome you. You’ll have a moment to take a break, use the restrooms, enjoy a refreshing drink, and receive a boxed lunch for the journey.
From this point, an exciting two-hour journey begins along the imposing Napo River aboard our covered motorized boats, heading toward the welcome area of the Napo Wildlife Center. Upon arrival, we will switch to one of our rowing canoes, where our team will paddle while you relax and enjoy a magical and tranquil ride through a narrow creek, leading to the lodge nestled at the edge of a beautiful lagoon.
Along the way, you’ll catch your first glimpses of the region’s incredible biodiversity. You may spot Hoatzins, Rufescent Tiger-Herons, Sungrebes, Red-bellied Macaws, and the striking Green-and-rufous Kingfisher.
Once at the lodge, you will be greeted with a refreshing drink and snacks, followed by a brief orientation session about your stay, led by our lodge administrator. Afterward, you’ll be guided to your comfortable room overlooking the lush Amazonian jungle.
Day 2, 3, 4 & 5 – Full day of activities
Four full days or more, to scratch the surface of the avifauna in western Amazonia and get a feel for the complexity of rich habitats and microhabitats within easy reach of the lodge.
One or two mornings we’ll visit the very sturdy canopy tower, which offers privileged access to a world apart from the rest of the rainforest. Flocks of oropendolas, aracaris, tanagers, and euphonias roam the canopy in search of fruit. Spangled and Plum-throated Cotingas glow from the treetops, raptors perch on vantage points to dry off in the morning sun, White-browed Purpletufts and Crowned Slaty Flycatchers sally for insects, numerous parrots and macaws fly by or drop in if there is a fruiting tree nearby, and many other species wander past (and through!) the tower tree.
Good forest trails offer access to another component of the avifauna, with woodcreepers, antbirds, and tinamous particularly well represented. We should encounter the vocally striking Screaming Piha and the visually striking Black-necked Red Cotinga.
A number of clay licks (or “saladeros”) exist on the NWC lands, and here we should see (and hear!) the spectacle of hundreds of parrots and parakeets coming in to eat clay.
We’ll also enjoy numerous canoe rides around the lake by the lodge and along adjacent creeks, where the songs of Silvered and Plumbeous Antbirds reverberate through the flooded forest.
Birds we’ll be seeking here include the poorly known Zigzag Heron, the habitat specialist Point-tailed Palmcreeper, Orange-crested Manakin, and the striking Long-billed Woodcreeper, plus several species of monkeys and the impressive Giant River Otter.
The river-edge forest, where we’ll visit the local community that built and so ably runs the lodge, is home to numerous other species such as Turquoise and Magpie Tanagers, Rufous-headed Woodpecker, and Swallow-winged Puffbird.
Day 6 – Departure day
The day starts early as we return to the welcome area for the transfer to the motorboat. We’ll cruise through the Añangu stream, enjoying the morning sounds and the tranquil dawn scenery. Then, we’ll switch to the motorized boat for the journey back to Coca. Upon arrival, we’ll check in for the return flight to Quito.
